Discover the spirit of IAYC

You have come to the web site of the IAYC, the International Astronomical Youth Camp. The International Astronomical Youth Camp (IAYC) is a three-week long summer camp aiming to promote knowledge on astronomy and related sciences in a unique international atmosphere. Each year, the IAYC takes place at a different European location.

IAYC 2010 in Klingenthal, Germany from August 1st to August 21st 2010

The International Astronomical Youth Camp (IAYC) 2010 will take place in the small town of Klingenthal in the East of Germany. Klingenthal (9,000 inhabitants) lies in the region called "Vogtland" which forms the geographical border between the two German federal states Bavaria and Saxony. The nearest large towns in the surrounding are Hof in Bavaria (45 km), Plauen in Saxony (30 km) and Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic (40 km). The camp house itself will be a very pleasant youth hostel called "Jugendherberge Aschberg", right on the border with the Czech Republic (5 m).

The IAYC 2010 will offer a wide range of working groups and topics, ranging from practical astronomy and basic theoretical astronomy over simulations in astronomy and electronic-robotronic engineering to high energy astrophysics, astrochemistry and not-so-introductory physics. There will be something for everyone from the complete beginner to the ambitious student.

The IAYC 2010 will take place from August, 1st to 21st 2010. The fee for accommodation, full board and the whole program, including the excursion, will be 620 Euro. However, early applications arriving before April 15th 2010 receive a 30 EUR reduction, making the camp fee 590 EUR. For interested persons who are in the situation of not being able to pay the camp fee themselves, a limited number of grants is available.

More detailed information is available in the First Info. To receive a printed version of the 1st info, please contact info@iayc.org. For more information, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@iayc.org.

What makes IAYC so special?

The IAYC is different from most astronomical camps. At first, this is because of its international character: about seventy people from many different countries live together for three weeks. They are between 16 and 24 years old and share a common interest: astronomy. That is why every participant, with his or her own cultural background, forms an important piece in the complex puzzle of camp life.

Secondly, the camp is different in the way you work, or learn. The IAYC is not like staying in a hotel and following a summer school or an astronomy course. During the three weeks of IAYC, you will carry out your own small research project. You will therefore not just accept facts, but you will discover them yourself, or together with people with whom you will work together. The success of the camp depends on your contribution!

Who organises the IAYCs?

The IAYCs are organised by IWA, The International Workshop for Astronomy e.V. The IWA team consists of an international team of students and young scientists who all started as participants in IAYC and then joined IWA. IWA has been organising the IAYC for more than four decades. We do not have any commercial interest in organising the International Astronomical Youth Camps. Therefore, all IAYC leaders are volunteers!

IAYC is great to make new friends. But IAYC is also great to observe and discover the night sky. The astropictures in this section were taken from participants during the last IAYCs.
